Breaking News: KZN Road Traffic Inspector Dies in Vehicle Fire

A KwaZulu‑Natal Road Traffic Inspector has died after the state‑owned vehicle he was travelling in caught fire while on duty along the N2 freeway near Park Rynie on the South Coast. The incident occurred on the evening of 22 September 2026, around 8pm.  

The inspector, identified as Timothy Simpson, was alone in the vehicle when it suddenly became engulfed in flames. Despite efforts, he was unable to escape and died at the scene. Simpson, described by colleagues as a decorated and disciplined officer, had served at the Park Rynie RTI base and was widely respected for his commitment to road safety.  

Authorities have launched a forensic and mechanical investigation to determine the cause of the fire. A specialised SAPS team is working alongside the Department of Transport to examine evidence from the vehicle. KwaZulu‑Natal MEC for Transport, Siboniso Duma, expressed condolences to Simpson’s family, calling him a “hero” and pledging government support.  

The tragedy has raised urgent questions about the safety of state‑owned vehicles and the risks faced daily by traffic inspectors patrolling South Africa’s highways. Senior management from the RTI is expected to meet Simpson’s family and colleagues in the coming days.
