Samsung is now the top-selling smartphone brand in the world, beating Apple. Samsung has 20.8% of the market. Also, Chinese smartphone makers are doing better now. Apple’s sales went down by 9.6% compared to last year, according to IDC.
iPhone sales dropped sharply after a great quarter where it beat Samsung to become the top phone maker. Now, with a 17.3% market share, it’s back in second place. Meanwhile, Chinese companies like Huawei are getting stronger in the market.
In the first quarter, Xiaomi, a top smartphone maker in China, grabbed third place with a 14.1% market share.
Samsung, a South Korean company, sold over 60 million phones during this period. They launched their latest flagship smartphone lineup, the Galaxy S24 series, at the start of the year.
Data from Counterpoint shows that within the first three weeks of release, sales of Galaxy S24 smartphones worldwide increased by 8% compared to the previous year’s Galaxy S23 series.
According to IDC, Apple sent out 50.1 million iPhones in the first quarter, down from 55.4 million units in the same period last year.
Compared to a year ago, Apple’s smartphone shipments to China dropped by 2.1% in the last quarter of 2023. This decline shows the challenges the company is facing in its third-largest market. In China, many businesses and government organizations restrict their staff from using Apple devices. This is similar to how the American government limits the use of Chinese software due to security worries.
At its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June, the Cupertino, California-based company plans to reveal updates to the software that runs iPhones, iPads, and other Apple products.
Investors are closely watching Apple’s progress in artificial intelligence (AI) development since the company hasn’t revealed much about how it will use AI in its products.
Earlier this year, Apple lost its position as the world’s most valuable company to Microsoft.
